Early settlers called Shaker Heights "The Valley of God’s Pleasure" -- a glorious territory that was known for its beautiful trees and gently rolling acreage. In the 1900’s the Van Sweringen Brothers envisioned a distinctive village of gracious homes on generous tree-lined streets and began the original planning of Shaker Heights.
Shaker Heights, though a mere ten miles from downtown Cleveland, offers its 31,000 residents easy access to everything cultural, professional, educational and sporting. With wonderful Shaker Lakes and many parkland areas, residents find peaceful spaces in which to read, picnic, jog, stroll and even feed the ducks in everyone’s favorite pond.
In addition, Shaker’s Thorton Park is home to an outdoor pool, tennis, volleyball courts, sledding hills, and a year-round indoor skating rink. It is also headquarters for Shaker’s Recreation Department, which offers leisure time classes for all ages.
And for those who love the outdoors, the string of Metroparks dubbed the Emerald Necklace is the ultimate. Lake Erie is Cleveland’s North Coast and a haven for sunning on the beach, fishing, and boating fun. The area’s surrounding countryside is a delight for country drives, antique hunters, and artists. So, you see why its interesting diversity and easy lifestyle has made Shaker the community of choice.
On a grander scale, Shaker is a short spin from all the downtown excitement - the fun and theatrical flair of Playhouse Square’s dining and stage presentations, the great little spots and delicious restaurants in the Flats and Warehouse Districts. The wonderful shopping at Cleveland’s West Side Market is made for those who love the gourmet experience.
